چکیده

Handwriting recognition is often considered as an ideal solution for pen-based Chinese input. However, handwriting Chinese suffers from a performance bottleneck due to the complex structure of Chinese characters. We designed Donuts, a technique that allows a user to enter Chinese characters by navigating through a hierarchical marking menu of phonetic symbols. In particular, to place 12 vowels into a marking menu while keeping the performance, we designed a pressure-sensitive marking menu to organize the 12 vowels into two pressure-sensitive layers. Informal user testing on Donuts has shown positive feedback. ACM Classification: H5.2 [Information interfaces and presentation]: User Interfaces. Graphical user interfaces. The Design and Evaluation of Marking Menus

This research focuses on the use of hand drawn marks as a human-computer input technique. Drawing a mark is an efficient command input technique in many situations. However, marks are not intrinsically self-explanatory as are other interactive techniques such as buttons and menus. This research develops and evaluates an interaction technique called marking menus which integrates menus and marks...

Push Menu: Extending Marking Menus for Pressure-Enabled Input Devices

Several approaches have been proposed to increase the breadth of standard Marking Menus over the 8 item limit, most of which have focused on the use of the standard 2D input space (x-y). We present Push Menu, an extension of Marking Menu that takes advantage of pressure input as a third input dimension to increase menu breadth. We present the results of a preliminary experiment that validates o...

Toolglasses, Marking Menus, and Hotkeys: A Comparison of One and Two-Handed Command Selection Techniques

Research has shown that bimanual (two-handed) interfaces often provide more intuitive, efficient, and comfortable interaction than one-handed interfaces. This paper introduces a new input technique, bimanual marking menus, and compares its performance with five other techniques: static toolbars, hotkeys, grouped hotkeys, marking menus, and toolglasses. The study builds on previous work by setti...

An Empirical Evaluation of Some Articulatory and Cognitive Aspects of Marking Menus

We describe "marking menus", an extension of "pie menus" which makes . Pie menus are circular menus subdivided into sectors, each of which might correspond to a different command. Marking menus are pie menus in which the path of the cursor leaves an ink trail. Thus, selecting a sector from a marking menu creates a visual mark similar to a pen stroke on paper. Marking menus are also unique in th...
